Extractions & Post Op Surgical Guide

When a tooth is lost or a specific surgery is completed the main goal is improved healing.

One of the most important factors in healing is blood clot formation and stability.

The purpose of your stitches is to keep the edges of the surgical site close to each other and allow faster healing.  The retention of the tissue and or graft and healing for the initial 3 days is the most important timeframe. Simple common sense care is usually all that you will need.

Day ONE: take medications prescribed which is usually 3 Advil or 2 Tylenol every 6 - 8 hours and antibiotic every 8 – 12 hours depending on the prescription brush gently around the neighboring teeth near the surgical site but care for your mouth carefully but as usual.

Try not to touch the surgical site while chewing or brushing. Do Not Rinse or Swish Vigorously today. Do not drink liquids through a straw.

Day TWO: Usually with our advanced methods by now pain and swelling  are starting to calm down. Continue 3 Advil and 2 Tylenol for a full 24 hours from your surgery. If you have little to no pain you may reduce the pain medicine accordingly. Continue your antibiotic until the bottle is completely used up. Clean the teeth around the surgical area gently and care for the rest of the mouth as usual. Rinse the area gently once morning and once evening with Salt water or Peridex™ (if provided).

Day THREE: We typically expect that pain medication is minimal by this time. Continue your antibiotic as prescribed. Salt water or Peridex™ rinses continue twice a day. Try not to focus on or overclean the area our goal is still to keep the surgical site relatively undisturbed as much as possible.
